Intro to Steeking

From the pattern: "Steeking is technique used to safely and securely cut your knitting to create holes where you want them. It is frequently used with complex colorwork sweaters, because it is easier and faster to knit colorwork in the round. It can be scary to steek a big sweater, so I created this scaled-down steeking project to help knitters try out the technique fearlessly. Think of this project as a mini-sweater vest for your coffee cup. The cozy is worked in the round with stranded colorwork to create a classic fair-isle pattern. Then follow the step-by-step guide to steeking with a crocheted reinforcement. You can do it!"

Instructor: Shari Besser

Cost: $40 class fee + materials

Date: Thursdays, February 13th and 20th, 3:30-5:30 pm

***Note: This class will require some pre-work. You will need to complete the "Bottom Ribbing" section of the pattern prior to class.

Level: Advanced Beginner. Prior to this class, you need to be able to cast on, knit, purl, knit in the round, read a pattern and have prior experience with colorwork. This class is for participants 18+.

Skills: We will do a refresher on knitting with two colors, managing floats and reading a chart; and cover backward loop cast on, how to pick up and knit a button band, do a crocheted reinforcement, and steek (cutting your work, eek!).

Instructor Bio: From Shari Besser – “I’ve been teaching classes since 1998, when my twins graduated from high school, and Zandy from Zandy’s yarn shop took a chance on me! I learn more from people than I teach! My grandma taught me to crochet and knit a bit, but a friend sat me down and taught me the basics, I’m so thankful for her! I’m still learning and in awe of what so many accomplish. I might be a familiar face as I’ve taught at a few shops!”
